Morning Yoga with My Mom ❤️ Gentle Stretching, Deep Breathing & Authentic Wellness Journey

This morning was one of those beautiful reminders that wellness is not about perfection—it’s about showing up, being present, and enjoying the journey. Mom and I started our day together with another yoga and stretching session, taking things slowly and focusing on movement, breath, and simply appreciating the time we have together.

We began seated, settling into the morning with deep breathing exercises. I guided Mom through slow inhales, encouraging her to breathe in deeply for five counts and hold the breath before slowly releasing it. We repeated the pattern several times, allowing ourselves to become grounded and present. The morning air felt calm, and there was something peaceful about simply sitting together and breathing. Sometimes the simplest exercises are the most powerful.

From there, we lifted our arms toward the sky, stretching upward and opening the chest. I encouraged Mom to look up toward the sky and gently lean back as far as she comfortably could. We brought our hands together above our heads and then lowered them down to our hearts. We repeated the movement several times, combining breath with movement and allowing ourselves to feel gratitude for another day. Looking up toward the sky always feels symbolic to me—a reminder to remain hopeful and open to possibility.

We continued with seated twists, turning our bodies first to one side and then the other. These gentle spinal twists always feel wonderful because they encourage flexibility while helping release tension held in the back and shoulders. Mom followed along carefully, and we held each position for several breaths before switching sides. There was no rush. Just slow movement and patience.

Next came a forward fold with the soles of our feet together. I joked that I still couldn’t fold very far forward myself, but that’s okay. Yoga has never been about touching your toes. It’s about honoring where your body is today. We settled into the pose and focused on deep breathing, inhaling through the nose and exhaling slowly. I encouraged everyone watching to imagine smelling roses on the inhale and blowing out birthday candles on the exhale. As we sat there quietly, the sounds around us faded into the background and all that remained was the rhythm of our breathing.

Those moments of stillness are some of my favorites.

Life can be busy and overwhelming, but when you sit quietly and focus on your breath, even for a few minutes, everything seems to slow down. It becomes easier to hear your own thoughts and reconnect with yourself.

After warming up, we moved into deeper stretches. One leg extended forward while the other remained bent. We reached toward our toes, stretching the backs of our legs and working on flexibility. Mom immediately felt the stretch and laughed about how much it hurt.

“It’s okay,” I reminded her. “Don’t force it. Just do what you can.”

That’s one of the most important lessons yoga teaches us. Progress happens gradually. There’s no need to force your body into positions it isn’t ready for.

From there we explored side stretches, creating large C-shapes with our bodies and reaching through our fingertips. Mom worked carefully through each movement while I adjusted and demonstrated different modifications. We laughed through some of the poses and celebrated every little success. What mattered wasn’t how perfect the pose looked—it was that we were moving and trying together.

As the session continued, we transitioned onto our stomachs for gentle back-strengthening exercises. Cobra pose proved to be one of the more challenging movements for Mom. We practiced lifting the chest while keeping the lower body grounded, slowly building strength in the back and arms.

“It’s okay,” I kept reminding her. “It takes time to build muscle strength.”

Watching her continue despite the challenge made me smile. So much of fitness is simply deciding to keep trying. Every repetition matters. Every attempt counts.

Between exercises, our conversation wandered naturally into everyday life. We talked about health, bone density scans, calcium, vitamin D, and all the practical realities of getting older and taking care of our bodies. We joked, shared stories, and somehow even ended up discussing art and famous paintings. It felt less like a workout and more like spending quality time together while taking care of ourselves.

One of the highlights of the session was attempting boat pose. We lifted our feet off the ground, engaging our core muscles while trying not to fall over. There was plenty of laughter involved. Holding the position wasn’t easy, but we managed a few counts before collapsing and laughing about it.

Afterward, we stretched everything out, wiggling our fingers and toes, extending our arms overhead, and moving gently from side to side. We worked through shoulder stretches, hip stretches, and even gave ourselves small self-massages to release tension.

Mom smiled and admitted that the stretching felt good.

Those are the moments I love most.

Not the difficult poses. Not the challenging exercises.

The moments where you can actually feel your body relaxing and releasing stress.

As we moved toward the end of the session, we practiced bridge poses, lifting our hips toward the sky and engaging our legs and core. We added gentle leg movements and stretches, continuing to focus on breath and body awareness. By then, both of us were feeling the effects of the workout, but in the best possible way.

At one point I paused and reflected on how good it feels to simply focus on your body.

To slow down.

To breathe.

To stretch.

To appreciate what your body can do.

These sessions have become so much more than exercise for me. They are moments of connection—with myself, with nature, and in this case, with my mom. There is something incredibly special about sharing wellness practices with the people you love.

As we wrapped up the session, we sat quietly together and reflected on gratitude. Gratitude for peace. Gratitude for health. Gratitude for family. Gratitude for the opportunity to spend another morning moving, laughing, and growing together.

We finished the practice with a simple “Namaste.”

Mom smiled.

“Namaste.”

“Namaste.”

And just like that, another beautiful morning was added to the collection of memories we’re creating together.

These authentic yoga sessions with Mom may not always be perfect, but that’s exactly why I love them. They’re real. They’re filled with laughter, encouragement, patience, and love. They remind me that wellness isn’t about achieving perfection—it’s about showing up exactly as you are and embracing the journey.

Thank you for joining us for another morning of yoga, stretching, reflection, and connection. Moments like these are truly some of my favorites.

Namaste. 🙏💛
